Yaplet Enables New Web Chat
A new site called yaplet, currently in beta, enables Websites to become chat rooms with the click of a button. When users enable a 'yaplet' book mark, any page they visit can instantly be turned into a chat room. Once initiated, a panel opens on the right-hand side of the browser screen with user's names and content; a separate chat window can be used as well if a user wishes to navigate away from the current page but continue chatting.
One aspect of yaplet that i appreciate is that the service is free and requires no registration or installation - users identify themselves (enter their name) if and when they want to post a comment or chat with other users. By enabling Websites to become chat rooms, yaplet is providing web surfers the opportunity to identify and communicate with users that have similar interests.
The ability for people to communicate real-time with others is rapidly becoming a standard practice rather then a trend. In fact, many online companies already have or have tested 'live chat' features on their Websites. From a client/customer service perspective, this type of feature enhances a user's experience tremendously and the sites that have this feature enabled have a competitive edge over those that do not. We can expect to see an increasing number of sites adopt similar communication features in the future - real-time communicating is 'in' and it seems to be a natural progression from message boards and static user comment forums.
